The article is an abbreviated chapter from the written but never published monograph by N., titled ‘Apocrypha on Macarius of Rome in Slavic-Russian written tradition’ (934 manuscript leaves). Work on the topic was started by the author in 1915, at the seminary of Academician V.N. Peretz, who suggested him that theme of research. Works by N. on the existence of the Apocrypha of Greek origin, which describes the journey of three monks in search of an earthly paradise, on the threshold of which the hermit Macarius lives, in the Slavic-Russian written tradition still remain the most fundamental study of this monument, which had a great influence on the formation of ideas about earthly paradise in the Russian folk tradition.

In this article N. analyzes the varieties of Greek versions of the text and its Latin translations. In the publication, the author for the first time introduced the Menologic type of the Apocrypha. The appendix to the article publishes the texts of the Apocrypha (the first Menologic translation, the second Menologic translation, the Prologue translation from the Greek Menology of Basil, the second Prologue version, the third Prologue version).
