This work by J. Lensu was created on the base of materials gathered by the author in the summer of 1929, when he was studying Finnish dialects in the Kuivazovsky and Pargolovsky Districts of the Leningrad Region. On December 24, 1929, at the Institute of Language and Thought of the Ac. of Sc. of the U.S.S.R., he made a report on the results of his work, and prepared an article ‘Materials on the Votic Dialects’. The linguistic material presented in the article was vividly illustrated with the texts collected by the author during his field research. Lensu also described the peculiarities of the life and material culture of the Votes. For researchers of religion, the most interesting in this work are several magic formulas published by Lensu. They are characterized with obvious syncretic religious type; they mention both Christ riding on a horse and the ‘gray worm’. L. included those formulas in his article on the religious beliefs of Finish people in the Leningrad Region, which has been never published in a complete form (some fragments were published several years ago).
