The book was based on the Doctoral thesis of K., which he defended in 1880. In the book, on the large historical material (from the era of Constantine the Great to Justinian the Great, the time of the first five Ecumenical Councils), secular laws and the Church canons and decrees, the features of the Church-State relations in the Byzantine Empire are revealed. The work provides a detailed description of the history of the Byzantine Church. The author demonstrates the formation and development of the ‘Byzantine model’ of the Church-State relations, which became the main model of those ones in Kievan and Moscow Russia, and later in the Russian Empire.
