The article was written in September 1923 as a revision of two lectures read at the Russian Academy of the History of Material Culture in January and August 1923. The impetus for the study of the light character of the deity was the report by V.K. Shileiko “On the Initial Meaning of the Semitic El” read at the same Academy. The article is directed against the theory of borrowing mythological images of one religion from another one. It studies the creation myth as a reminder of Yahweh's struggle with the dragon, the light character of Yahweh, the formation of the Biblical pantheon, which included the ‘dead’ gods of other nations, and angels as ‘partial’ or ‘instant’ gods. The purpose of the article is to reveal the true features of the most ancient beliefs, which plaid the role of symbols and gradually getting lost their original meaning, but traditionally remained integral attributes of the deity.
