The collection of works by B. includes three of his books, previously published in foreign languages: ‘The National Theater of Czechs and Slovaks’ (in Czech, 1940), ‘Magic Actions, Rites and Beliefs of Transcarpathia’ (in French, 1929), and ‘Functions of the National Costume in Moravian Slovakia’ (in Slovak, 1937). In addition to three monographs, a collection included eight articles by B.: ‘Folklore as a Special Form of Creativity’ (with R.O. Yakobson), ‘Active-Collective, Passive-Collective, Productive and Unproductive Ethnographic Facts’, ‘Christmas Tree in Eastern Slovakia’, ‘Tradition and Improvisation in the Folk Art’, ‘Improvisation and Norms of Artistic Methods on the Data of Narratives of the Eighteenth Century, Inscriptions on Popular Prints, Fairy Tales and Songs about Yerema and Thomas’, ‘On the Issue of Comparative Studying Folk Verbal, Pictorial, and Choreographic Art among Slavs’, ‘Functions of Leitmotifs in the Russian Epic’, and ‘Artistic Means in Humorous Market-place Folklore’.
According its themes, the collection is divided into two parts: monographs devoted mainly to ethnographic topics (folk theater, rituals, and functions of folk clothing), and articles on the problems of folklore and folk art.
According to the folklorist A.L. Toporkov, the book represents the entire creative life of the researcher and leaves a complete impression of his heritage.
At the end of the book there is a bibliography of research works and translations by B. (Pp. 523–543).
