“Essays on the History of Russian Church’ was written by A. V. Kartashev (1875-1960), the last Ober Procurator of the Most Holy Synod, and the first and the last Minister for the Matters of Confessions of the temporary Government, later – Professor of the St Sergius Theological Institute in Paris. It is a general course of lectures, published in two volumes in 1959 – a year before the death of the author. He made those lectures in 1926-1960 (more than 30 years) in Paris. He based on the earlier history of Russian Church by E. E. Golubinsky (till the 16th cent.), and completed it with data on the ecclesiastic life till 1801. The author divided the Chuchr history into the periods corresponding to the leadership of metropolitans and patriarchs. The most successful chapters were on the reform of the mid-seventeenth century and that one of the time of Peter the Great (before 1917, such issued were under hard censorship; it was not possible to analyze those matters independently, especially, to criticize the Spiritual Reglament). The author gave a special attention to theological disputes, heresies, and Orthodox enlightenment. He also analyzed the situation connected with the Brest Union.
