The book was one of the first research works on zoomorphic images created by Finnish-Ugric peoples. Studying of those images was started together with the shaping of Russian Finnish and Ugric studies and archaeology, in general. The work by A. was based on the interdisciplinary paleo-ethnological approach to analyzing archaeological monuments. In the book zoomorphic images made by ‘Uralian Chud’ (found on the territory of the Tobolsk, Vyatka, Perm’, and Vologda Regions) were compared with various sacred images of birds; the author came to the conclusion that the concept of birds “as creatures who had been able to carry human desires… and, from the other hand, to declare the will of gods… <> could be found at peoples of different stages of cultural development”.
