Greek religion is described in the second part of ‘An Essay on Greek Antiquities’. The book was planned and written in Vilno, where V. V. Latyshev worked as a teacher of gymnasium; the second, added publication was made in St. Petersburg in 1888-1889, when he became a prominent philologist.
It is a detailed encyclopedic review of religion of the Ancient Greece with a list of sources. The author started with a description of sanctuaries and sacred places, material objects of cults, altars, temples and so on. The second chapter was on priests; the third chapter was on rituals (prayers, spells, claims, sacrifices, festival songs, games, and processions). The fourth chapter gave a calendar of feasts, great Greek games, festivals of Athens and other cities-states. The fifth chapter was on divinations, oracles, mysteries, religious communities, and domestic cults; the sixth chapter was on the Greek theatre and its cult roots.
The book was published several times (the latest publication in 1997) and is an excellent introduction into the classical religion.
